Step by step: The implantation procedure

From diagnostics to the insertion of the implant

Artificial tooth roots – implants – are inserted into the patient’s jawbone to anchor dentures and prostheses. Let us explain step by step how this procedure is carried out at the Implant Center Hamm.

1. diagnostics and preliminary examination

You will come to our practice for a preliminary examination. With the help of digital, state-of-the-art volume tomography (DVT), a three-dimensional image of your facial skull is taken (the radiation exposure is very low with this method). This gives us a comprehensive picture of the condition of your jaw and allows us to assess the bone quality of your jaw. If the jawbone is sufficiently developed, nothing stands in the way of implantation. In some cases, however, prior jaw bone augmentation (e.g. a sinus lift in the upper jaw) is necessary, especially if the tooth loss occurred some time ago. We plan the surgical procedure in cooperation with your dentist.

2. painless uncovering and drilling

We perform the implantation as an outpatient surgical procedure under local anesthesia. Depending on the extent of the procedure, treatment under twilight sleep may be an option. This method is also popular with anxious patients. Implantation under general anesthesia is also possible on request. You will not feel anything because the pain is eliminated by anesthesia. A small channel is then drilled into the jawbone. This allows us to determine the position where the implant is to be anchored. A drilling template ensures the accuracy of the alignment. Depending on the condition of the bone, a small incision is made to expose the jawbone before this step. If sufficient bone material is available, this step is not necessary.

3. place implant

Once the canal has been drilled, the implant can be inserted. As the implant screw has a thread, it can be “screwed” into the jawbone and a firm hold is ensured from the outset (primary stability). The implant then begins to heal. Depending on the healing procedure, the gums above the implant are either sutured or left open for healing.
